Travellers to Egypt have been warned to avoid all demonstrations as protests against President Mohammed Morsi gather pace.
The Foreign & Commonwealth updated its travel advice to the country yesterday ahead of fresh protests planned for today and over the weekend.
“Further demonstrations in Cairo and elsewhere in Egypt are likely over the weekend of December 7-8,” the FCO said.
“You should avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings. If you find yourself in a crowd you should leave the area immediately.
“Demonstrations happen regularly across Egypt, often on Fridays, but can take place at other times.
“Police often use tear gas for crowd control. If you become aware of any nearby protests you should leave the area immediately.
“You should keep yourself informed of developments, including by regularly checking this advice and monitoring local media for updates on further planned protests.”
Egypt was plunged into crisis after President Morsi issued a decree on November 22 stripping the judiciary of powers to challenge his decisions.
He has called for a meeting of all political parties tomorrow (Saturday).
