The UK’s largest budget chain Premier Inn outperformed rivals with a 12.5% rise in sales in the third quarter of the year.
Parent company Whitbread said total revenue per available room was up by 0.7% compared with a decline of 0.6% for the total hotel market and a 5.4% drop in the mid-scale and economy sector in the 13 weeks to November 29.
Premier Inn increased total room nights sold by 9.6% to 10.5 million over the same period last year.
The company opened 3,375 rooms in the period to give a total of 52,070. It aims to open around 4,500 new rooms and eight joint site restaurants in the UK by the end of the year.
Whitbread plans to increase the number of Premier Inn UK rooms to at least 65,000 by 2015-16.
Chief executive Andy Harrison said: “The economic environment remains challenging with no change in our background consumer market. We are on track to deliver full year results in line with expectations.”
The company also runs the Costa coffee chain and restaurants.
