Flights to and from Fiji were cancelled as a cyclone approached the Pacific island nation bringing high winds and rain.
Cyclone Evan hit Samoa last week, killing at least four people and causing widespread flooding.
The BBC reported the Fiji Metrological Service as saying early this morning that the storm was 17 miles northwest of the tourist centre of Nadi – 4pm local time.
Winds close to the centre of the cyclone were estimated at between 105-115mph
Early reports suggested that power had been lost in some areas of Fiji, with indications of flooding and structural damage.
The country’s leader Frank Bainimarama reportedly said: “I cannot stress enough how serious this is. Every Fijian will be affected but we must take preventative steps now.”
