Around 3,400 travellers were forced to spend the night at Tokyo’s Narita airport after snow caused airlines to cancel 71 flights.
About 3 inches of snow fell in central Tokyo and around Narita on Monday – a national holiday in Japan – causing traffic and train delays.
As normal operations at the airport were resumed today, the weather outlook in the UK remained bleak with warnings of further snow and ice in many parts of the country.
Stansted airport had teams working overnight to clear snowfall to keep the airport fully operational. Some flights at Leeds/Bradford, Newcastle and Aberdeen airports were cancelled this morning while Humberside was suffering from flight disruption due to the adverse weather.
The BBC Weather Centre predicted further snow in eastern areas, including Lincolnshire and East Anglia, and in parts of southeast England during the morning. Snow has also been falling overnight in some northern counties of England.
Forecasters said the cold spell would continue until Friday.
