Firms save cash by enticing staff to travel on weekends

BUSINESS travellers are being put under increasing pressure to save time and money by travelling on weekends, according to the latest research by American Express Travel Services.

The Amex corporate travel barometer study shows that 79% of respondents were asked to travel on a Saturday or Sunday for business purposes last year, with one in 10 flying over a weekend more than once a month.

Amex head of UK corporate travel Iain Robinson said: “Travel budgets are coming under greater scrutiny as travel managers look for more effective ways to deliver savings.”

A business traveller to New York can make a saving of over £600 by flying over a weekend. Some companies are incentivising weekend travel, offering extra money or travel and accommodation for a partner.

In an effort to drive down spiralling costs, 65% of corporate travellers said they would be asked to fly from secondary airports in 2000 this year.
