Agents fear higher BA GDS fees

Agents fear they could be hit by higher booking surcharges on some British Airways fares on Amadeus as the airline and GDS struggle to thrash out a new distribution agreement.

BA has written to agents to say it is hopeful of reaching a deal with Amadeus before the current arrangements expire on March 31 for BA and April 5 for Iberia.

BA said it would continue to distribute through Amadeus until a deal is reached, but warned it may “take steps to mitigate any increased costs” it incurs. The carrier would not specify what these steps might be.

However, Travel Weekly understands the airline wants to increase sector charges, which are currently £1 per segment for certain fares, and is considering withholding some inventory.

Kevin Thom, president of the Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association, said: “Not only should these discussions be concluded at the earliest possible time but they must also be cognisant of the current economic climate.

“It is important the per-sector charges for booking BA are not driven up.

“Failure to do so would send a very strong message that the airline wishes to compete with the trade rather than work in partnership.”

BA said agents remain a “valued part of its distribution strategy”. Richard Tams, head of UK sales and marketing, said: “We have not said anything about any surcharges.”

An Amadeus spokesman said: “BA has been a valued customer for a long time and we hope that will continue.”
