BA plan sparks ATOL concern

the Association of Airline Consolidators and the Civil Aviation Authority are due to meet next month to discuss British Airways’ plan to axe commission.

AAC chairman David Mortimer said he was concerned that all agents may need a CAA-backed Air Travel Organisers’ Licence following BA’s move.

He argued that as agents will not receive commission from BA after January 1 next year, they will effectively be dealing in net fares and by law would need an ATOL.

Mortimer claimed the CAA would be unwilling to issue hundreds of new ATOLs due to the extra administration this would cause.

The AAC is also seeking a meeting with BA over the commission and net fares issue. A date is expected before the end of this month.
