British tourist killed by elephant in India

A British holidaymaker is reported to have been trampled to death by a wild elephant in India.

The 67-year-old man from London was killed by a wild elephant while on safari at the Masinagudi National Park in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Two tourist guides who were with him managed to escape the elephant and are in police custody, according to local media.

Police suspect that the elephant got irritated with a camera flash light and charged.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office said it was “aware of the tragic death of a British national in southern India”.

It added it was “providing consular assistance at this difficult time”.
