Bath hotel restored to former glory

Bailbrook House Hotel in Bath will be unveiled today after a £10 million restoration.

The hotel, which was bought by Hand Picked Hotels last year, was built as a private residence in the late 18th century and is set in 20 acres of private grounds with views of the city.

Chief executive of Hand Picked Hotels Julia Hands said: “The mansion house had been used as a school, a residential home, a training centre, and latterly for conferences, with people passing through but never staying to appreciate the grandeur of the mansion. Our main aim was to restore life into the building and bring it back to its original status as an elegant country house.

Architects and designers worked closely with English Heritage and the planners and conservation officers of the local council throughout the restoration.

Unsightly alterations have been removed and throughout the building fireplaces, original sash windows, plaster mouldings, internal doors and staircases have been restored.

The basement has been converted into a restaurant called Cloisters that features stone coffers that took 3 months to cleaned and repaired.

The Mansion House has 13 bedrooms, three large lounges and a conservatory bar.

Bailbrook Court, next to the Mansion House, has 81 bedrooms, a restaurant and extensive meeting and event facilities.

This hotel is the 20th in the Hand Picked Hotels collection.
