Brazil hotel interest soars after World Cup draw

Interest in hotels in Brazil has soared since the 2014 World Cup group stage matches were drawn on Friday.

Searches for hotels in Sao Paulo, where England faces Uruguay on June 19, were 30 times higher on Saturday and Sunday when compared with the previous weekend, according to OTA Hotels.com.

Belo Horizonte hotel searches – the city where England is set to meet Costa Rica on June 24 – were 25 times higher.

Searches for hotels in Manaus, where England plays Italy, also grew, while searches for Rio de Janeiro were four times higher than the previous weekend.

General searches for hotels in Brazil are up by 18% this year compared to 2012, while interest in properties in Rio de Janeiro more than doubled in the last week.

A spokeswoman said: “With the surge of searches for hotels this weekend, it’s clear that interest is growing rapidly ahead of next year’s World Cup.

“As the event gets closer we’re expecting to see demand rise, particularly in January as Fifa reveals the next lucky ticket holders and more hotel rooms are made available.

“Sporting events have real global appeal and fans may face fierce competition to get a hotel room, with demand expected to outstrip supply during the World Cup.

“Our advice to fans is to book rooms early. Supporters who keep their ‘eye on the ball’ and book rooms as soon as more are made available next month are likely to score the best value for money.”
