Eleven dead as snow and ice hit US and Canada

At least 11 people have died as a severe ice storm hit Canada and northern states in the US.

Temperatures as low as -15C are expected in southern Canada over the next few days.

An estimated 10-30 mm of ice built up on trees and other surfaces in the greater Toronto area during the storm.

About 400,000 customers in eastern Canada and 280,000 in the US state of Michigan had no electricity yesterday. It could be the end of the week before power is restored.

Flights were delayed or cancelled due to the storm at one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Via Rail warned customers travelling between Toronto and Montreal, Ottawa and New York to expect delays.

The US National Weather Service warned “another round of snow and ice” was expected for New England yesterday.

Parts of Maine are expected to see as much as half an inch of ice, the BBC reported.
