Warning of flight delays and cancellations due to ATC strikes

Flights across various countries in Europe face delays and cancellations due to a series of walkouts by air traffic controllers.

Countries affected include France, Italy and Portugal.

Airlines operating to and from Paris airports have been requested to reduce their flying schedules by 20%.

EasyJet said it had to cancel a “small number” of services from both Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly airports due to a strike by French controllers due to start tonight (Wednesday) and run until the early hours of Friday morning.

“We strongly recommend that customers rebook flights after the strike period has ended as there is still some uncertainty as to what the full impact of the strike may be,” easyJet said.

Ryanair warned that more than 80 flights will be cancelled due to Italian air traffic controller strikes today and added that further delays and cancellations were likely.

The timing of further industrial action today differs from country to country.

Italian air traffic control staff will be on strike from 1pm until 5pm local time, while Portuguese controllers are walking out between 7am and 9am local time and 2pm to 4pm.

“During these periods we expect significant impact to our flights,” easyJet warned

“We have proactively re-timed some flights later into and out of Lisbon in order to avoid the strike period,” the airline said.

“We have also re-timed some flights to and from Milan Malpensa.

“If you are due to fly with us on Wednesday, your flight could also be impacted by delays due to the knock-on impact of the strike action.”

However, the carrier said it did not anticipate any flight cancellations and would be providing live updates on all flights during the strike period on its website.

British Airways said: “Air traffic controllers are expected to strike across several European countries on Wednesday 29 January causing disruption to flights.

“Although we intend to operate as many flights as possible we have been forced to make some cancellations and have re-timed a number of flights to avoid the strike period.”
