British tourists should stay in their hotels if necessary as Thailand goes to the polls on Sunday in a general election.
The warning came in an updated travel advisory from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office amid suggestions that anti-government protestors will seek to disrupt the election.
The FCO pointed to protests and “some violence” when polling stations opened for advanced voting last weekend.
“On 2 February there are likely to be protests at polling locations and some of these could turn violent.
“Be alert to the situation, avoid all protests, and if you’re in any doubt about your safety on February 2, stay in your accommodation,” the latest advisory said.
“There have been attacks involving weapons and explosives at protest sites and protest marches. Attacks have taken place during the daytime and at night.”
The capital of Bangkok has been the focus of government opposition and demonstrations and is subject to a 60-day state of emergency imposed on January 22.
Britons continue to be advised to avoid all protests, political gatherings, demonstrations and marches.
