Ferry services cancelled as storm sweeps in

A fresh wave of storms and rain has forced the cancellation of various ferry services today.

Brittany Ferries blamed the adverse weather conditions for the cancellation of sailings from Portsmouth to Santander and between Plymouth and Roscoff.

The company has also been forced to re-schedule a number of departures.

The Port of Dover said this morning that the ferry terminal was operating normally with spaces available on cross-channel ferries following various delays yesterday.

Seventeen flood warnings remained in place across Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Surrey and Somerset with strong high winds forecast for this evening and Saturday morning.

Almost 25,000 homes and businesses were without electricity including those in parts of Wales, the West Midlands, Cheshire, north Shropshire and southwest England.

Many rail services remain disrupted due to flooding, including lines from London Paddington to Reading and Oxford.
