Australian trade unions demand clarity from Qantas

Australian trade unions are planning to meet with Qantas, saying there is a lack of clarity about the planned cut of 5,000 jobs announced yesterday.

The struggling Australian carrier wants to slash £1 billion from its costs as losses mount.

Nathan Safe, president of the Australian and International Pilots Association, said: “There’s still a lot of uncertainty and a real lack of clarity about where at least 2,000 of those jobs will be cut from.”

Qantas has said the job cuts will come across the board in all divisions and voluntary redundancy packages will be offered.

Matt Rocks from the Transport Workers Union of Australia told the BBC: “What we need to see is a turnaround strategy for the airline, and then perhaps we’ll see an improvement in Qantas’s fortune.”

Qantas claims its main rival in Australia, Virgin Australia, which is also loss-making, is getting help from its owner Singapore Airlines, Etihad and Air New Zealand.

It has appealed to the Australian government for help and wants to see the rules on foreign ownership of airlines relaxed.
