British travellers to Turkey have been warned to avoid protests planned for this weekend following the death of a teenage anti-government protestor.
The funeral of 15-year-old Berkin Elvan, who had been in a coma since being hit by a tear gas canister nine months ago, prompted demonstrations in several cities across Turkey.
A man was shot dead in Istanbul’s Şişli district on Wednesday, with terrorist group the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Front claiming responsibility.
Protests in Istanbul centred on the Şişli district, as well as around Taksim Square and Istiklal Street.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, updating its travel advice to the country today, said: “There were violent exchanges between the police and demonstrators in a number of cities, with police using tear gas and water cannon to disperse protestors. Following a confrontation, one man was shot and later died.
“Further demonstrations in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and other major cities may take place over the weekend of 14-16 March.
“Keep up to date with developments, be vigilant and avoid any protests or demonstrations.”
