Spanish UK visitor numbers up despite March decline

The number of British visitors to Spain fell by 3.3% in March to 745,000 as overall arrivals edged up to 3.9 million.

Despite last month’s fall, cumulative UK visitor numbers since the start of the year are up by 4.7%, according to the Spanish tourism ministry.

The UK remains the largest international tourism market to the country, representing 19.1% of all international tourists.

Germany was the second strongest market, representing 17.7% of all international visitors to Spain (+0.3%), followed by France which represented 17% of all international visitors (+5.9%).

Spain has attracted more than 10 million international tourists since January, up by 7.2% year-on-year.

The Balearic islands suffered a 31.6% slump in visitors, with just under 226,000 in March while arrivals since the start of the year, are down by more than 24% to 416.000. This drop is partly due to fewer travellers from Germany and the UK.

The Canary Islands was the most popular Spanish destination in March, attracting more than 1.1 million tourists, a rise of 7.7%.

Most visitors to Spain opted to stay in hotels (67.8%) in March with a third taking package holidays. The majority (67.2%) travelled independently.
