Scandinavian low-cost carrier Norwegian is to lease three additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for its long-haul operations.
Two of the aircraft will be delivered in 2016 and one in 2017.
The 787-9 is claimed to be a more environmentally friendly and larger Dreamliner model, which is scheduled to enter commercial service this year.
The aircraft has capacity to carry up to 20% more passengers than the 787-8, yet 8% lower fuel consumption per seat and can fly further, depending on the cabin configuration.
Norwegian currently has five 787-8 Dreamliners in its fleet and another three on order. In addition, the company has six 787-9s on order.
Today’s order will give the airline 17 aircraft in its long-haul fleet in 2018.
The carrier is due to start flights to New York, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale from Gatwick this summer.
