A day promoting Turkish tourism planned for London on Sunday has been cancelled following the Soma mining accident in which almost 300 people were killed.
The Turkish ministry of culture and information said Turkish Day in London has been postponed until further notice.
A spokesman for the organisers said: “Turkey is continuing to suffer with the tragedy of the mining accident in Soma, having lost hundreds of brave miners while the situation continues to develop.
“Families, friends and colleagues of those that have passed away are experiencing unimaginable grief and suffering at this time. We therefore cannot justify celebrating at Turkish Day in London so soon after this catastrophic event.
“Turkish Day in London is thus postponed until further notice. Our thoughts are with the survivors and all those that have lost loved ones.”
The decision came amid three days of mourning across Turkey and a 24-hour strike by several unions who blame the privatisation of the mining sector for making working conditions more dangerous.
