Japan’s weather agency lifted some storm and high-wave warnings issued for Okinawa on Tuesday evening after Typhoon Neoguri passed over the islands.

The typhoon brought torrential rain and winds gusting up to 151 mph.

Flights and some ferry services were suspended, while schools were shut yesterday as a result.

About 590,000 local residents across Okinawa were advised to stay at home or move to community centres for shelter.

Winds uprooted trees and tore wooden buildings from their foundations.

The typhoon is now heading over the East China Sea and is weakening, the BBC reported.

But authorities in China and Taiwan warned ships to stay clear of the storm.
