Deadly typhoon Rammasun hits southern China

Air, rail and road traffic was suspended in southern China as the biggest typhoon to hit the region in 40 years killed at least 17 people.

Typhoon Rammasun killed at least eight people on the holiday island of Hainan, with others missing, and nine in the Guangxi region, according to state media.

It made landfall on Friday with winds exceeding 124mph.

At least 94 people were killed when the typhoon hit the northern Philippines last week, where locals dubbed it Typhoon Glenda.

The storm was also affecting Vietnam, where heavy rain was expected before it starts to weaken today (Monday).

A new typhoon, Matmo, is now threatening the area ravaged by Rammasun (Glenda), Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokeswoman Mina Marasigan told the AFP news agency.
