A ban on airlines flying into Tel Aviv’s main international airport has been lifted by the US aviation regulator.

In a statement the Federal Aviation Administration said: “The FAA’s primary mission and interest are the protection of people travelling on US airlines.

“The agency will continue to closely monitor the very fluid situation around Ben Gurion Airport and will take additional actions, as necessary.”

Despite the lifting of the ban the FAA said it would continue to monitor the situation with the government of Israel and the US to “mitigate potential risks to aviation”.

The flying ban had been in place since Tuesday after a Hamas rocket landed close to the airport.

The imposing of the ban was seen by Hamas as a significant victory and was criticised by the Israeli government.

The Transportation Ministry in Israel said the airport was safe but the European safety regulator, the EASA continues to advise against flying in to Tel Aviv.

EasyJet extended the suspension of its services from Luton, Gatwick and Manchester to Thursday.
