Business travel leaders urged to shape apprenticeships

The business travel sector has been asked to help refine standards for a new apprenticeship scheme.

A group led by HR directors at travel management companies (TMCs) including Hillgate Travel and BCD Travel have been working to establish a training programme for budding front-line corporate travel consultants.

The government-backed Trailblazer Group, which is supported by People 1st, will submit its final recommendations in mid-October.

Before then it has asked the industry to help shape the new qualification, which could help the industry alleviate a worsening skills shortage.

Annette Allmark, director of strategic policy at People 1st, said the project had been extended to give employers who have not yet a chance to comment the opportunity to have a say.

Allmark said: “The trailblazer group will continue to look at these standards to make sure they meet businesses needs across the industry, especially around the IT, maths and geography aspects.

“They will be available on the People 1st website to review for anyone interested.

She added: “It’s important people take part. Even if they don’t currently employ an apprentice, they can shape the future of their industry and help learners gain the skills they need.”

Angela Williams, BCD director of human resources, said: “The business travel sector is expanding and, while this is fantastic for many businesses, some employers are facing a real issue around skill shortages.

“We need to make sure we attract, develop and retain the next generation of consultants.”

The standards will be available to evaluate on the People 1st website until September 30.
