Brits jet off in their millions

Travel association Abta has predicted upwards of two million UK residents will go on holiday over the August Bank Holiday, up more than 200,000 on last year.

Abta said the Balearic and Canary Islands in Spain would again be the most-popular overseas destinations, along with Greece, Turkey and Tunisia.

But more holidaymakers look set to fly long haul this year, with Florida and Cancun reported by Abta members to have done brisk business.

Abta said top city-break destinations for the weekend include Barcelona, Amsterdam and Paris.

However, not all Britons will be jetting overseas.

Abta said the warm summer weather meant domestic holidays to the Channel Islands and traditional beach resorts had been selling well through its members.

Chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “This weekend is set to be one of the busiest of the year.

“While a holiday budget will go further abroad this year thanks to a strong pound, we are also expecting lots of people to enjoy the long weekend at home.”
