More than 300 flights were cancelled, while hundreds of thousands had to evacuate their homes, as the strongest storm of the year hit Japan.

Typhoon Vongfong made landfall on Kyushu island this morning local time.

Kyushu’s bullet train services were suspended yesterday due to the wind.

Meteorologists say Vongfong could pass over Tokyo tomorrow.

Vongfong has winds of up to 75 mph, with higher gusts, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Meanwhile, a major relief operation was underway after Cyclone Hudhud struck the eastern coast of India, killing at least six people and forcing as many as 400,000 to evacuate.

The cyclone wrecked homes, uprooted trees and power lines, blocked roads and damaged crops in in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa states.
