A series of tropical storm watches and warnings are in place across the eastern Caribbean as tropical cyclone Gonzalo swept across the region.
UK travellers to islands such as Anguilla, Dominica, Turks and Caicos, British Virgin Islands, and Montserrat are being advised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to monitor local weather advisories.
They should also contact local authorities or tour representatives to check travel arrangements.
Heavy rain and strong winds buffeted Antigua, where the effects of Gonzalo were expected to be felt for several hours.
The island’s government ordered schools and businesses to close amid an island-wide power outage and opened four emergency shelters.
Gonzalo was reported to be slowly gaining strength towards potential hurricane status on track to move over the US Virgin Islands and parts of Puerto Rico.
Scott Stripling, a meteorologist tracking the storm from the US National Hurricane Centre in Miami told the Associated Press: “It’s not out of the question that we could see it become a hurricane later this evening or tonight.”
Such a storm is likely to affect flights as well as cruise ships sailing in the Caribbean.
