Eurotunnel cuts replace duty-free losses

EUROTUNNEL has cut commission from 8% to 7% and reduced overrides by 1% in an attempt to recoup lost duty-free revenues.

Eurotunnel UK passenger marketing and sales director Peter Stratton said: “We have to look at repositioning our costs. That means getting fares back up to what they were four or five years ago and realising what we have lost in duty-free revenue.

“There is still an opportunity there to make money – agents are getting lower commissions but on higher fares.”

The move has infuriated agents who condemned it as unacceptable.

ABTA Rail and Coach Committee chairman Doug Wardle said: “Why should agents carry any loss of revenue for Eurotunnel? It’s an easy way out for them. And by putting up rates agents may get more money but then the public loses out. It’s just a joke.”
