Politicians urged to act swiftly on Airports Commission recommendation

The UK’s main political parties have been urged to offer manifesto commitments that pledge to make a quick decision on airports expansion.

The call came from pro-expansion group Let Britain Fly in response to the launch of the Airports Commission’s public consultation into new runways for London and the south-east.

The campaign group wants action once the commission makes its final recommendation next summer, after the general election next summer.

It claims the business community is concerned that without a clear pledge in election manifestos to ‘make a quick on airports expansion decision guided by the Airports Commission’ there could be a risk of further potential political procrastination on urgently needed new runway capacity.

Let Britain Fly director Gavin Hayes said: “We welcome the public consultation on airports expansion, however none of the proposals will get off the ground without the clear political will to get on and do something.

“In order to maintain the trust and confidence of the business community we would therefore like to see the main parties offer manifesto commitments to make a quick decision on airports expansion in a timely fashion following the election, guided by the Airports Commission’s final recommendation.”
