Search called off for woman missing from ferry

Rescuers have called off a “massive search” to find a passenger who was reported missing from the P&O Ferries’ vessel Pride of Kent (pictured) en-route to Calais.

HM Coastguard initially said it was looking for a missing woman but later said all crew and passengers had been “accounted for safe and well”.

The search for the missing passenger was stood down after eight hours.

A helicopter from Lee-on-Solent, lifeboats from Dungeness, Dover, Walmer, and Calais, and a Port of Dover tug boat were deployed in the search for the woman.

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard told the BBC: “Dover Coastguard was contacted just after 1.30am by the ferry who reported that a female passenger was missing and they believed she had gone overboard.

“The area has been extensively searched overnight and into this morning with nothing found.

“Unless any new information comes to light, the search has been stood down.”
