Fledgling research reveals 2% growth in conference market

THE UKbusiness conference market generated £2.2bn in revenue last year, according to new research.

The Annual Report of the British Conference Market Trends Survey, published this week, shows that 685,000 business conferences took place in Britain last year, a rise of 2% on 1997 figures.

The survey, by the British Tourist Authority and based on 164 conference venues throughout the UK, showed almost three-quarters of conferences were corporate events, with an average number of 38 delegates.

Conference organisers generated an average revenue for each conference of £66 per delegate.

A spokesman for the BTA said:”The conference and meetings business is the key tourism market segment for many destinations within Britain, but until recently there has been very little information on trends within the market to assist destinations and venues with marketing decisions.”
