NCL puts innovation onboard new vessel

NORWEGIAN Cruise Lines has unveiled a number of special features of its forthcoming ship Norwegian Sky, including an Internet coffee bar and an Italian-Chinese restaurant named Ciao-Chow.

The coffee bar will offer Internet and e-mail facilities, plus an ‘astroflash’ service, giving passengers predictions about their future.

All cabins will have Internet and e-mail access. Passengers will also be able to send e-mail postcards using a digital camera in the photo gallery.

Hotel director Klaus Lugmaier said Ciao-Chow had been inspired by the explorer Marco Polo, who introduced pasta to Italy after discovering it in China. During the day, the restaurant will serve pizzas.

Other new features include a £31,000 ‘sky mobile’ in the shape of a Viking ship, which will circle the top deck serving drinks. Norwegian Sky will also be staging a new show put together by Sir CameronMackintosh called Hey Mr Producer. This will be based on several of the best numbers from his musicals, such as Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera.

Norwegian Sky will depart from Dover for its inaugural cruise on August 9. After operating in Scandinavia this summer, the ship will carry out 14-night itineraries in both the east and west Caribbean region this winter, then move to Seattle in May 2000 to offer cruises to Alaska.

NCL is offering an 11-night cruise out of Dover at a lead-in price of £1,325. The 80,000-ton ship has a capacity of 2,450 passengers.
