TAKE an infamous footballer, a beautiful pop star, the nation’s most irritating DJ and London’s best known hotel.
Mix them all together, throw in thousands of pounds and a celebrity wedding, and what have you got.
Well to Backchat’s ears, nothing but denials and accusations.
Driving into the work last Tuesday, one of Backchat’s scribes overheard Virgin Radio’s Chris Evans getting terribly excited about a story involving England star David Beckham and then superstar fiancee Victoria ‘Posh’ Adams.
The tale went that a woman had booked the Ritz’s honeymoon suite two years ago, but had been bombarded by calls from the manager to switch rooms.
The manager offered her £5,000, then £15,000 and finally £50,000 plus free food and drink before she would move to the presidential suite.
But the story doesn’t end there.
On receiving her information on the booking and tips on how to enjoy the luxurious room, the lucky lady noticed her thank you cheque from the hotel.
Barely believing her eyes she noticed the signature was of one David Beckham.
Then it all clicked into place, remembering Becks was to marry Posh on the same weekend as her honeymoon.
Great story all round it would seem.Well not quite so…
A call to the Ritz’s press office failed to shed much light on whether the country’s most famous couple were planning a stay.
“The story is unfounded and to our knowledge we have no-one of that name staying,” said a well-spoken woman.
Was Evans making it up? Was the mystery woman really 50 grand better off? And was the Ritz being economical with the truth?
Unfortunately, as Backchat went to press slightly before the society wedding of the year, we just can’t tell you. Sorry.
