A rise in consumer spending confidence is leading to more people looking to take holidays in higher grade hotels, according to Travel Republic.
The online company’s top 10 highest-rated hotels last year were all four and five-star properties for the first time.
This contrasts with 2011 when Travel Republic’s best-selling hotel was a three-star property in Crete where prices started from £26 a night.
Managing director Ian Simmonds said: “Customers are seeing the value in spending that little bit extra for four or five-star hotels.
“The results we’ve just seen for 2014 reflect this. It’s the first year we’ve seen a top 10 comprising solely top-end properties.
At number one is The Cliff Bay Hotel in Madeira which achieved a near-perfect average rating of 9.52 out of 10 in the year.
One guest described the hotel as “absolutely first class. Excellent accommodation, food and service. Couldn’t fault it.”
Simmonds said: “With 300,000 hotels on TravelRepublic.co.uk, securing a spot in the top 20 is a remarkable achievement.”
Customers are asked to rank the hotel they stayed in, from 1 (very poor) to 10 (spectacular).
The facility is only available to those who have booked and returned from their stay, ensuring that the reviews are 100% genuine, according to the company
Customers added 200,000 new reviews last year, taking the total to more than 900,000.
