Fred Olsen cruise ship suffers engine fire

A Fred Olsen Cruise Line ship with more than 1,100 passengers and crew aboard was left adrift off Morocco for several hours yesterday after an engine room fire.

The ship, Boudicca, has 784 passengers and 356 crew on board.

It left Southampton on January 20 on an 18-night cruise to the Canary Islands and Cape Verde.

The fire in the early hours of the morning reportedly left the ship without power for approximately five hours.

There were no injuries reported to passengers or crew.

A Fred Olsen spokeswoman confirmed there had been a fire in the engine room and said Boudicca had listed for “a short period” but was now stable and moving.
She said the ship had five engines running.

The ship left Cadiz on Saturday and was due in Lanzarote yesterday where it was expected to arrive as planned.

In a statement, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said: “The ship is currently under way with three auxiliary engines running and two main engines, and we are reviewing the itinerary to get the ship back on schedule.”

Boudicca is one of four cruise liners owned by Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.
