We asked Erna Low what its clients asked most frequently about spa holidays. Here’s what the operator told us…
What is the best length of stay? For the more traditional, medically-oriented cures and diet programmes a minimum stay of two to three weeks is recommended. For thalassotherapy programmes a week to 10 days is ideal to get the maximum benefit. However, with many of the newer spa resorts now emphasising preventative rather than curative treatments, a short restorative break over a weekend can be the ideal way to recharge your batteries.
What treatments are available? It very much depends on the resort. Thalassotherapy programmes are offered widely in France, and in Spain and Ireland where the curative properties of sea water are the main element of the treatments. In Italy the primary treatment uses thermal mud mixed with the local spa water.
Other resorts offer slimming programmes, while some combine beauty treatments with reflexology or Shiatsu massage to promote programmes for anti-stress, relaxation and general well-being. In some resorts there is a daily programme of exercise classes, tai chi, yoga, and guided walks.
What else is there to do? You can relax by the pool or in the sauna, exercise in the gym, or go sightseeing in the local area. Group tours are often arranged by the hotel to local places of interest, or you can borrow a bicycle and explore on your own. There is often tennis, golf and horse riding nearby.
If I buy a package, what extra costs will I have to pay when I arrive? Most packages include half-board and a certain number of treatments, which vary from resort to resort. A medical check-up is sometimes necessary before beginning a course of treatment and generally costs around £25.
Are there any treatments that might not be good for me? If you suffer from high blood pressure or are pregnant it is generally not advisable to swim in warm thermal waters or have mud or algae wraps. The consultants should always be advised of any medical conditions you may have before you embark on any programmes.
