Carriers to face competition from European rail services

EUROPEAN business travellers will rely more on rail travel to get around the continent in the next few years, according to Maersk DFDS Travel managing director Mike Carrivick.

He said:”Airports will begin to suffer the same pressure on flights as Heathrow currently suffers. Air travel will become so full of delays that business travellers will prefer to travel by rail.

“In Europe the rail services run on time and are good, offering excellent city to city links.”

However, Carrivick launched an attack on rail travel in the UKfor being nowhere near as reliable as its European counterparts.

He said:”Ever since British Rail was de-nationalised it has become a farce.

“I would say that overall practices are Dickensian.

“There is a definite lack of clarity and the risk for business travellers is that if you book a train ticket and you mess it up, you can lose your entire business with a client and it is not your fault.”
