BM cuts link with American

BRITISHMidland is to end its codeshare deal with American Airlines at the end of the winter season.

The airline claimed the number of passengers taking advantage of the agreement had declined recently.

Director of strategy and external affairs Alex Grant said the formation of Oneworld, founded by American and British Airways last September, had affected customer numbers as passengers had diverted to BA.

“We now believe it would be more beneficial for British Midland to focus efforts on developing enhanced passenger benefits with our other three transatlantic codeshare partners,” said Grant.

From the US, British Midland shares flights with Virgin Atlantic, Continental Airlines and United Airlines.

United is expected to be British Midland’s main partner when the UK carrier starts transatlantic flights.

The British Midland/American deal covers flights from Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.
