Illinois is featured in a new suggested five-day Midwest flydrive itinerary that includes parts of the state, together with Missouri, and is based on the legendary Route 66. It includes stops at popular diners, historic landmarks and character accommodation.
Five-day itinerary: The Best of Route 66
Days 1-3: pick up a car in Chicago. Enjoy an American breakfast at the city’s famous Lou Mitchell’s diner. Then head south along Route 66, spending three full days touring attractions in Illinois.
Days 3-4: the route takes in a drive along the Mississippi River. Stops include Cahokia Mounds, the only prehistoric native American village north of Mexico, and the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. Travellers then spend two days in Missouri.
Day 5: back in Illinois and a stop at Baxter’s Vineyards in Nauvoo, one of the state’s oldest wineries, and a visit to Galesburg and historic Seminary Street. Overnight in Galesburg before taking an interstate route back to Chicago.
