The travel industry will have a former senior figure in Parliament and in the new government following the election of Google UK head of travel Nigel Huddleston (pictured) as Conservative MP in Mid-Worcestershire.
But a second candidate from the industry, former Abta head of public affairs Luke Pollard, lost narrowly in Plymouth Sutton and Devonport.
Huddleston stood down from his role at Google just weeks ago. He had been expected to win in what is considered a safe Tory seat.
Pollard had been forecast to win the Plymouth seat for Labour right up to this morning, despite a disappointing night for the party.
The former Abta man captured 36.7% of the vote but came second to Tory candidate Oliver Colville, who won by 523 votes.
The Conservatives appeared on course for a small majority in the next Parliament, defying all opinion polls in the run-up to the general election.
The Scottish nationalist SNP won a landslide in Scotland.
