Some carriers have suspended flights to Haiti after a Spirit Airlines aircraft was struck by gunfire while trying to land in Port-au-Prince.
The flight from Fort Lauderdale was diverted to the neighbouring Dominican Republic on Monday.
A flight attendant reportedly suffered minor injuries while all passengers escaped unhurt.
US citizens were advised not to travel to Haiti and avoid the area around the capital’s Toussaint Louverture international airport.
The US State Department said it was limiting operations at its embassy in Port-au-Prince today (Tuesday) due to continued violence throughout the city.
Spirit has suspended operations at Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien on the country’s northern coast pending further evaluation.
JetBlue and American Airlines have cancelled flights from the US to Haiti until Thursday.
Other airlines serving the Haitian capital of Port-auPrince include Delta, Air Canada, Air France, Copa Airlines and Air Caraibes.
Spirit Airlines said: “Flight 951 from Fort Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince diverted and landed safely in Santiago, Dominican Republic (STI).
“Following the flight’s arrival at STI, an inspection revealed evidence of damage to the aircraft consistent with gunfire.”
The airline added: “The safety of our guests and team members is our top priority, and we have suspended our service at Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien pending further evaluation.”

A State Department alert said: “The security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous. Travel within Haiti is conducted at your own risk.
“The US government cannot guarantee your safety travelling to airports, borders, or during any onward travel. You should consider your personal security situation before traveling anywhere in Haiti. Only attempt to depart Haiti or travel within Haiti if you believe it is safe for you to do so.”
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to Haiti due to the “volatile security situation”.
It said: “There are currently no British consular officials in Haiti and our ability to provide consular assistance is severely limited and cannot be delivered in person in Haiti.
“If you choose to travel to or stay in Haiti against FCDO advice, try to avoid all crowds and public events, and take appropriate security precautions.”
