Over-50s specialist Saga to expand cruise business

Over-50s specialist Saga is considering expanding its cruise business.

The disclosure came in a trading statement ahead of the group’s annual meeting today.

Saga said it has made good progress in delivering strategic objectives outlined for the year ending January 2016.

Among these is a plan to add more ships to Saga Pearl II and Saga Sapphire.

Saga said it was “evaluating options to acquire new shipping capacity to enhance our successful cruise business”.

The group’s travel division handled almost 200,000 holidaymakers on tours and cruises in 2014 with improved load factors of 85% across both ships.

Group chief executive, Lance Batchelor, said: “We have started the year well, with strong trading across all business divisions.

“This performance is in line with our expectations and we remain on track to deliver on our growth target for the year.”

Interim results are due to be announced on September 30.
