A four-year-old British boy has died while on holiday in Mijas on the Costa del Sol after falling into a pool.
The incident happened on Sunday evening at a house in the Mijas Golf resort in Las Lagunas, the Foreign Office has confirmed.
Reports say there were around 20 people at the property at the time and the parents of the boy were having dinner with friends while children played at the rear of the house.
The alarm was raised by a 15-year-old but the boy could not be saved by emergency workers who attended the scene. A post-mortem is to be carried out.
The Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Spain on 16 August.
“We are in contact with local authorities and have provided the family with advice on bereavement abroad, including on repatriation.”
