MEMBERSHIP of the Truly Independent Professional Travel Organisation has been expanded to 30 operators on the eve of the application deadline.
Founder Gary David, who originally stressed only 20 operators would be invited to join, said the increased membership followed unprecedented support for the scheme. He insisted all operators would still be competing in different markets, which was one of the major principles of the scheme.
“I initially thought any more than 20 members and they would be in direct competition with each other which is exactly what we didn’t want,” said David. “But I have realised there are many more market sectors. All members will be able to work alongside each other.”
The increased membership will also swell TIPTO’s marketing budget from £500,000 to £750,000. Each member will pay £25,000.
David, managing director of Cadogan Holidays, said 39 applications had been received of which nine will be turned down. They could join a further 41 other operators in a second tier of membership.
“Whether that happens depends on the views of the original members,” said David. “It may be that they do not want the scheme extended.”
The list of founder members will be finalised this week. Meanwhile, David is bidding to join the council of the Association of Independent Tour Operators. He is one of nine candidates vying for the five places up for grabs.
