Cash-free alternatives help raise the stakes

three-star Topaz. Included in the deal are breakfast, lunch, dinner, unlimited snacks at the pool bar and unlimited locally produced alcohol.

Thomson also attributes the growing interest in Malta for summer ’99 to the success of its all-inclusives – the Topaz in its Skytours brochure and the Fortina and the Comino in its Summer Sun brochure.

Product planning manager, Malta, Linsey Andrews said: “The reason all-inclusives are doing well for us is their excellent service delivery. We have got all sectors of the market covered with our three hotels. The Topaz is good for families, the Comino, on its own island, offers complete tranquillity for busy couples, and the Fortina is good for couples who want to be pampered.”

Seven-night prices at the four-star Fortina lead in at £539, based on two adults sharing. As well as a full complement of meals, snacks and drinks, the deal offers two thalassotherapy (sea water treatment) sessions, a Scuba diving lesson, a harbour cruise and two full-day excursions.

Meanwhile, other operators cite self-catering as their best- selling product. Sunworld senior product manager Lorraine Hughes said its prime Malta sellers are the big self-catering units like St George’s Park and Bugibba Holiday Complex.

Prices lead in at £259 for seven nights’ self-catering at St George’s Park up to June 21. First-child prices start from £49. The four-star Ramla Bay Hotel has been added to the fourth-edition Summer Sun brochure and also makes its debut in next winter’s Golden Circle programme.

Airtours has added the five-star Radisson SAS Bay Point Resort to its Golden Years programme for next winter. Prices for seven nights lead in at £269 per person, including flights. Cosmos has introduced Gozo to its Summer Sun and Villas with Pools programmes.
