ABTA issues warning on year 2000 strategy

ABTA has issued a final warning to agents and operators to ensure their systems are year 2000 compliant.

Manager of ABTA’s members information bureau Daryl Nurthern believes that some companies have not covered everything they need to ensure the date change will run smoothly.

“Awareness is high and a lot of people think they are prepared but may not have taken all factors into account. For example, companies may have checked their PCs to ensure the internal clock will turn over but they may not have thought about the other software like Microsoft windows or Excel,” said Nurthern.

In response, ABTA has created a full-day seminar called the Millennium Masterclass.

The day includes a national overview explaining how well prepared related businesses are – such as trains and coach companies – and a case study from First Choice. It also looks at contingency planning.

“The plans may range from what to do if there is no power to the possibility of an airport closure. Where will you fly your customers from or to and how will you contact your them,” said Nurthern.

ABTA is also planning to distribute a list of questions that consumers are likely to ask about the millennium to all its members. For more details on ABTA’s year 2000 strategy, call 0171-307 1921.
