Luton enlargens security area as part of £100m redevelopment

An enlarged security area was opened last month as part of a £100 million redevelopment of Luton airport.

The security zone has been relocated to the ground floor of the airport terminal and expanded to handle growing numbers of passengers.

Latest screening technology has been installed to improve the experience for passengers.

Contractor Whitemountain has started also work on the site and will manage the construction and civil engineering of landside infrastructure and transport facilities.

This will see the existing approach road to the terminal building turned into a dual carriageway, the redevelopment of short stay car parks, the airport road network, a re-modelling of the set-down area and the repositioning of the coach terminal.

The start of work coincided with a record 1.2 million passengers using the airport in September, up 19.2% on the same month last year.

This gave Luton airport 18 months of consecutive growth.

Airport chief executive, Nick Barton, said: “These record passenger numbers demonstrate the increasing popularity of London Luton airport with travellers. They also highlight the importance of expanding the airport to help meet the capacity needs in the south-east.

“The appointment of Whitemountain and the relocation of security are major strides forward in our plans to ensure we can continue both to meet growing demand in future and improve the overall passenger experience.”

The £100 million project aims to increase the airport’s annual capacity from 12 million to 18 million passengers by 2026 including major upgrades to facilities.
