Thomas Cook is emerging from a “torrid” period and seeing green shoots of recovery, new UK managing director Chris Mottershead told a media event at this week’s Abta Travel Convention.
The former Tui boss, who took the role from Salman Syed this month, said he was honoured to be heading up the firm that will celebrate its 175th anniversary next year.
“I cannot be in a business that’s declining and there are so many opportunities. We are in a sector that’s in growth and there’s no reason why we can’t be part of that.
“We have an amazing brand that’s still so strong in this marketplace. We have hugely devoted people working for us. We still have the essence of a great business.”
Mottershead said Cook must combine the advantages of its heritage and long-serving staff with the latest technology but not forgetting its roots.
“We need to make sure we are delivering the best experience. Is it good enough? Are our customers satisfied? Do they enjoy themselves? Or are there parts of the business that are not working?
“I actually believe in high street retail. In line has its power but we have strong distribution in house and some great partners we work with.
“Together we will really take this business on and move it forward. October 2015 is the start of the next chapter.”
