Rail engineering works are expected to cause severe disruption for travellers heading to London’s two largest airports over the festive period.

Gatwick Express services will not operate for the next 10 days, while Heathrow links will stop for four due to a line closure between Paddington and Slough.

Disruption on routes to Gatwick will be further exacerbated as there are also planned works on Southern Rail routes which serve the airport.

Network Rail said 20,000 of its workers would be carrying out almost 500 improvement projects across the whole of the UK during the festive season.
