Uber developing ‘online travel agency’ in US

Taxi-hailing app Uber may be looking to develop an online travel agency business, according to American media reports.

The mobile app would allow users to plan trips, showing recommended flights, accommodation and the cost of an Uber.

Business Insider reports that Uber secured a new patent in the US to develop the technology on December 24.

Called “Uber Travel” in the images, users can enter a start location, date and time and the app creates a recommended itinerary. Flights would appear like it would on Expedia.

In the patent, Uber states that it will tap into the network of airlines, looking at a plane’s on-time performance and an individual’s preference for aisle and window seats.

It will also work with traditional hotels and “shared-economy systems” that allow people to rent out their apartments, likely Airbnb.

Uber declined to comment, according to Business Insider.
