Destination looks to focus on lesser-known attractions

China is planning to showcase new areas of the country to the UKmarket.

China National Tourist Office director UK, Ireland and Nordic countries Baoxiang Yin said there was a lot more to the destination than the country’s current top attractions such as the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation heritage site of Xian, home of the Terracotta Warriors, and the Great Wall of China. New areas being promoted include the Hunyuan province and the three gorges of the Yangtze.

But, according to Yin, the biggest push will be given to the island province of Hainan which offers pristine beaches to visitors.

The CNTOuses press trips to help lift the profile of lesser-known destinations.

“It’s a country that needs to be seen to understand how great it is,” added Yin.

This year Yin received £50,000 for advertising, the same as last year, to advertise in the trade press and to take part in trade shows.

Most of the promotion will be done in conjunction with some of the 100-plus operators that feature China, such as China Travel Service, Silk Step and Explore Worldwide.

The CNTO is actively seeking to increase the number of operators featuring its product.
